LANDLORD X SEAN TERRIS SENECA Tshirt
T shirt collaboration with artist Sean Terris benefiting Building Black Bedstuy
“When LANDLORD (ironically) reached out to collaborate I wanted to do something regarding property and ownership. Not only because their name is based around it, but also because during my time in quarantine I’ve been taking online real estate classes, so it seemed like a perfect alignment.
“Seneca Village was a community of wealthy blacks that existed from 1825-1855 where Central Park is now. At the time, in order to vote in New York, blacks had to own at least $250 worth of property (even though white men could vote just by existing), so Seneca was not only a community but also a path to suffrage. Now more than ever, we’re seeing how property ownership affects our lives in this country in more than one way. What I found ironic about the Amy cooper video, is that the land she’s standing on as she threatens this black mans life, was owned by his people 150 years years before the state destroyed it to build Central Park.
“Using Monopoly money (a game that you win by owning the most property), we decided to recreate an iconic photo of biggie smalls, playing dice on the same block 30 years later, highlighting the effects gentrification has had on the neighborhood.”
